Canyon De Chelly, Chinle, Arizona on the Navajo Reservation in northern Arizona, Labor Day Weekend 2006.  Canyon De. Chelly can be visited with a Navajo guide or a Park Service Ranger.

this Hogan was built 100 years ago by Howard's grandfather.  It is in the traditional Navajo female style.  You can contact Howard Smith at spiderrock@earthlink.net There is NO electric or running water.

You must have a Navajo guide or park ranger with you to hike.  Hiking or cross-country excursions off established roads without permission is trespassing.  This law respect property rights and protects the thousands of archeological sites.  Tampering with or removing archeological items is prohibited by both tribal and federal law.  The Navajo reservation extends across Arizona and into Utah and New Mexico (about 25,000 square miles).  Canyon de Chelly is just one small area.  The land is sacred to Native people.  When you visit the reservation you are visiting a Church - be respectful.
