"Over the years we have used The Surgical Support
Series for many types of surgical procedures with great success.
Our goal in the Merritt Hospital project is to produce scientific results
that can place this as an adjunct to the mainstream of surgical
procedures". Arthur Gladman, MD, Oakland, CA." Medical practitioners are beginning to understand more fully the power of the mind-body connection and its relationship to maintaining wellness or restoring wellness following a trauma such as surgery or a life-threatening disease. The Surgical Support Series from Monroe Products helps to strengthen the mind-body connection by using the patented, scientifically based and clinically proven sound technology known as Hem-sync. This remarkable "audio-guidance" technology, supported by more than 40 years of research is now embedded in sources of tapes and CDs. The audio-guidance process works quite simply by sending different sounds (tones) to each ear by way of stereo headphones. The two hemispheres of the brain then act in unison to "hear" a third signal- the difference between the two tones. This is not an actual sound, but an electrical signal that can only be perceived within the brain by both brain hemispheres working together. The result is a focused, whole-brain state known as hemispheric synchronization, or "Hemi-Sync" - an optimal condition for improving human performance. The Surgical Support Series was designed to ease the experience of illness, injury, surgery; chemotherapy, dental treatment and other physical trauma. By reinforcing the mind-body connection, these exercises help to strengthen the physical and mental components of the total healing process, including:
The following results have been noted by many using the series: Lower, but stable blood pressure; Deep relaxation; Slower, deeper breathing; Less and sometimes no pain medication required during surgery; Quicker return to consciousness in the recovery room; Accelerated recuperation. Cautions and Warnings: Please Read Non Verbal Recordings-Play while performing another activity or simply relax and enjoy the experience. Verbal Recordings-Sit or lay comfortably in a distraction-free environment. Adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Visualize or simply think of doing what the words describe. General notes on the use of the Surgical Support Series The Monroe Institute and Monroe Products are not medical or therapeutic organizations. The Surgical Support Series is recommended for use with the knowledge, cooperation, and/or participation of the patient's health care practitioners. The verbal instruction in the exercises encourage the patient to relax, to accept the healing assistance being provided by others, and to allow the body's own natural healing abilities to be fully utilized. Several of the exercises contain encodings; audible, coded messages presented in an exercise which the patient may recall and say to him/herself as desired to achieve a specific result. Encodings may be used ay time after listening to the exercise without further use of the recording itself. Whenever possible, use stereo headphones. Except for Intra-Op, if the patient in unable to use the headphones, place stereo speakers beside the bed and directly to the right and left of his/her head. It is important that the patient is not disturbed while the exercises are playing. When beginning any exercise: Position headphones comfortably. Adjust the volume to a low, comfortable level. Instruct the patient to close his/her eyes. Avoid interrupting the patient or removing the headphones for as long as possible after the exercise has ended. In all cases in which the patient is ambulatory: Have him/her lie down or recline in a quiet, softly lighted room after having used the bathroom to avoid the discomfort of a full bladder. Loosen or remove any tight clothing. remove glasses (or contacts) and shoes. If the patient expresses may anxiety regarding the content of an exercise, place the headphones (or a speaker) next to his/her right ear and play the tape in its entirely to dispel any concerns. The play the tape again with the headphones in place. Be sure to notify those attending the patient in the operating room, recovery room, and hospital room that the patient may: require less anesthesia for surgery; have lower and stable blood pressure; have slower and stable heart rate; have slower, deeper respiration; experience a quick return to consciousness in the recovery room after the surgery; ask for less pain or sleep medication; evidence accelerated recuperation. Any of the exercises in the Surgical Support Series may be experiences as often as desired. After a physical crisis has passed, or in the absence of illness or injury, these tapes can help to strengthen and sustain a condition of wellness. Patient may listen to tapes while lying down or reclining comfortably with eyes closed in a quiet, softly lighted environment whenever possible. Instruct the patient to use the bathroom prior to beginning a tape to avoid the discomfort of a full bladder. Play tapes on a stereo play, using headphones for best results. Position headphones comfortably on patient and adjust the volume to a low level where the patient can hear and understand the words but no louder. If patient is unable to use headphones, place stereo speakers beside the bed directly to the right and left of his/her head. Do NOT use Dolby™ or other noise-reduction systems as they interfere with the Hemi-sync signals. Do NOT use tapes while driving or operating machinery.
PRE-OP (Exercise
1): Applications: surgery, illness or injury, health maintenance. Instructions for use:
Encoding: "From this moment on, whenever you feel the desire to relax and remove all harmful tension and emotion from your mind and body, all you need do is think of the number 10, inhale deeply, and exhale as if you are blowing out a candle." Intra-Op (Exercise 2) Verbal guidance in this exercise gently leads the unconscious patient though processes of balancing and equalizing his/her total system. Intra-Op assist the patient in achieving a state of serenity and helps the patient reduce the perception of pain. Application: Surgery Instructions for use: Begin playing Intra-Op just before the patient enters the operating room. Continue to play this exercise during the operating room procedure and until surgery is complete. Please check the player's batteries and repeat feature. Recovery (Exercise 3) Verbal guidance in this exercise gently lead the unconscious patient through processes of balancing and equalizing his/her total system. Recovery assist the patient in achieving a state of serenity and helps the patient reduce the perception of pain. The patient is then guided into wakefulness. An encoding is given to help the patient reduce the perception of pain as necessary. Application: surgery Instructions for use: Play Recovery when the patient enters the recovery room. The patient will probably become conscious during the first part of the exercise; if not, continue playing until the patient returns to consciousness. Pain medication may not be required.
Encoding: Recuperation (Exercise 4) (Also available as Pain Management, a single title.) The verbal guidance in this exercise gently leads the patient into deep sleep and repeats the processes for balancing and equalizing his/her total system. Encodings are given for achieving total, instant relaxation, reducing pain and discomfort, and attaining sleep. Please note: Using the Hemi-Sync processes, significant changes may be achieved in the perception of pain by the conscious mind. The methods utilized in the Surgical Support Series focus on reducing the perception of pain, rather than eliminating it entirely, since pain itself is a warning signal that should not be ignored indefinitely. Applications: Illness or injury and health maintenance. Instructions for use: Illness or injury: Play Recuperation during the patient's stay in the intensive care or hospital room (Energy Walk, Exercise 5, may be substituted if the patient prefers) whenever he/she is restless, in pain, or unable to sleep. Allow the patient to sleep as long as possible after the exercise. Repeat this pattern until the patient is discharged.
Health maintenance
Encodings: Energy Walk (Exercise 5) (Also available as a single title.) This exercise is designed to support the healing process and help maintain a state of well-being. The verbal instructions gently lead the patient though a guided imagery process evoking peacefulness, serenity, and the gathering of strength. The patient is left in deep sleep.
